Creating a MAP - PART 4 & 5

Sessions 10 and onward: Behavioural tools part 2 including exposure - This section supports your child in gradually approaching the situations and activities that anxiety has previously made him/her avoid. S/he will get to decide what to do, and by using the tools s/he has learned, your child will gradually start to engage in situations and activities s/he is ready to try. For example, returning to school one class at a time, or saying “hi” to someone new.

Objectives: To help your child confront his/her anxiety and no longer let anxiety “be the boss.” Your child will learn, through a gradual, step-by-step process, how to face his/her fears one by one, starting with tasks that are not too scary, working his/her way up to harder and more challenging tasks when s/he feels ready.

Session 20: Wrap Party - This session marks the last session of the MAP program, and gets your child ready to finish his or her hard work.

Objectives:  For your child to design an exposure ladder to keep him/her engaged in exposures on a routine basis, also called living an exposure lifestyle. This can mean doing an exposure once every few days, or planning for a once-in-a-while exposure to prevent specific fears from creeping back in. In addition, you and your child will create a Time Capsule that provides your child with a “Cheat Sheet” of all the tools s/he has found useful throughout this work, to use into the future should anxiety start to creep back. As well, this session is an opportunity to celebrate for all the hard work that has been done. Some families like to use this final session to have a small celebration. Ideas can include making a cake, having dinner out at a restaurant, or doing a special activity together.
