Message from the Executive Director

As 2016 comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the AnxietyBC Ambassadors and donors – the support we receive makes it possible for us to maintain, update, and create trusted self-help resources and expand our community programs. Over the past couple of months, AnxietyBC had the pleasure of participating in several events; the BC School Counsellors Conference, Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Pieces of Mind Mental Health Conference, and we also partnered with The Chan Centre and UBC’s Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies for a panel discussion about obsessive compulsive disorder, titled: A Little OCD? Our participation in these programs would not be possible if it weren't for the support we receive, so thank you.

December 5th was International Volunteer Day, so I’ll also take this opportunity to express my gratitude towards all the AnxietyBC volunteers. Our volunteers put in countless hours to help us provide programs, services, as well as create awareness through efforts such as our MindShift Gala. I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the success of our association over the past year and wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.

Movember and Men's Mental Health - My Story, by Henry Allan

AnxietyBC In the Community - BCSCA Conference 2016

In October, Dr. Kristin Buhr, a regular collaborator of AnxietyBC, presented a workshop at the BC School Counsellors Conference titled: Strategies and Resources for Helping Youth Manage Anxiety. Kristen talked to the counsellors about effective strategies and resources for helping youth manage anxiety.

AnxietyBC In the Community - Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Pieces of Mind Mental Health Conference

Kwantlen Polytechnic University hosted the second annual Pieces of Mind Mental Health Conference in October. Dr. Gabriela Ionita, a collaborator with AnxietyBC, was invited to be the keynote speaker. Dr. Ionita provided an overview about anxiety in young adults and discussed what strategies and resources students can use to help them manage their anxiety.

Anxiety affects us all, young, and old, rich, and poor

Even though the cardiologist reassured him his heart was fine, he couldn’t stop worrying about his health. “My mind was totally focused on the symptoms in my body—a tight chest, a little dizziness. Every small symptom would trigger a panic attack,” he said. As he spent entire days scanning his body for illness, his old life melted away. He stopped going out in public because restaurants made his back spasm and busy streets caused hyperventilation. He quit his job, drifted, and eventually went bankrupt. “I didn’t enjoy life anymore,” he said.

A Little OCD?

AnxietyBC had the pleasure of partnering with The Chan Centre and UBC’s Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies for a panel discussion about obsessive compulsive disorder, titled: A Little OCD? The public was invited to come out and learn more about OCD from the panel featuring writer and slam poet Brendan McLeod; co-founder of OCDbc Bruce Mackenzie; inspirational youth with lived experience, Leah John; and registered psychologists Dr. Melisa Robichaud and Dr. Juliana Negreiros.

A baby! A beautiful new little bundle of joy. Pregnancy and early parenthood can indeed be a joyful period for some. Unfortunately, for many new moms, the time during pregnancy and immediately after the birth of a child is less about coochie coos and more about anxiety and the blues. I Am That Parent – A Message from a Parent of An Anxious Child

I’m a parent of an anxious child. Like all parents, I’m sleep deprived and consumed with getting my child off to school on time – but sometimes this is where our similarities end. For me, accomplishing what parents may consider as the most regular of activities can sometimes feel near impossible. Activities, such as having playdates or taking swimming lessons are a cause of stress and anxiety for my child.
