Strides Fall Issue 2010 - Learning and Anxiety

From the E.D's. desk

Hello to all the new and existing readers of "Strides". This is our fifth electronic edition, which completes the quarterly cycle.
Fall is definitely in the air as we had our first taste of winter weather here on the South Coast, with the mercury getting well into the minus side of the scale. The early bout of cold seems to have expedited the rush toward another Holiday Season. I have seen the lights going up in my neighborhood and heard the music being piped in at the shopping malls. With the global recession still heavily in the news it's no wonder that merchants are trying their best to attract our business.

This is the time of year when people and families congregate and there seem to be more social functions than at any other time of year, and although we all hope that the season will be joyful for everyone, this certainly isn't the case for all. Depression and anxiety are often at their worst for many people during this time of year, and some struggle with the short days and are affected by seasonal affective disorder.

For anyone living with an anxiety disorder, the coming weeks are an excellent time to diligently practice CBT techniques, which can help you to not only manage your anxiety, but perhaps even get to the point of making the Holiday Season a memorable and enjoyable experience.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the friends of AnxietyBC and the dedicated staff and volunteers for making this a fruitful year, and look forward to continued positive strides in 2011.

Regards,

Arto Tienaho
Executive Director
