AnxietyBC Strides - Fall 2011 Back to School - Separation Disorder - Test Anxiety

A recent Angus Reid survey revealed that 42% of Canadian parents noticed that anxiety levels in their kids have increased as a result of returning to school. It was noted that the highest number of anxious kids - 47% - are here in BC.

Anxiety BC believes it is a good sign that more people are talking openly about anxiety, a normal emotion that we all experience to various degrees in different situations. It is important to note, however, that feeling anxious does not necessarily mean that you, or your child, are battling an anxiety disorder. Take time to observe if the anxiety is debilitating and ensure you talk both to your child and your healthcare professional to assess whether a potential anxiety disorder is present.

We aim to bring further awareness to the general public around anxiety disorders, provide resources for managing anxiety when it reaches a level that interferes with your quality of life, and provide access to information around proven treatments.

To this end, we hope you enjoy the latest edition of Strides!

Test Anxiety Relief

If you are or know some one who has Test Anxiety, going back to school brings with it the dread of sitting exams. The following list highlights the thoughts and feelings you may experience.

During exams, do you...

• feel like you "go blank"?
• become frustrated?
• find yourself thinking "I can't do this" or "I'm stupid"?
• feel like the room is closing in on you?
• feel your heart racing or find it difficult to breathe?
• suddenly "know" the answers after turning in the test?
• score much lower than on homework or papers?

When performing, do you...

• become distracted?
• feel overwhelmed?
• miss important cues from your surroundings?
• "go blank" and forget what you are supposed to do?
• have distracting thoughts of failure or of poor performance?
• perform more poorly than in practice?

If this is you or some one you know - AnxietyBC has a Test Anxiety Booklet to help.
